...return on investment

With so many charitable campaigns out there, you want to be sure that employees know that giving to the United Way is the most efficient and effective they can spend their charitable dollars.

More than 20 local non-profit organizations and programs depend on United Way to raise money for critical programs that provide real solutions to community problems. In fact, United Way is the largest funder of health and human services after the government. For every new dollar we raise, unmet needs become significant returns on investment.

United Way's network of care extends across a six-county area. Twenty-one human service agencies delivered services to over 63,000 residents throughout the area.

With all United Way funding, decisions are made by experienced local volunteers, top corporate and community leaders who carefully scrutinize all United Way and agency expenditures. All agencies and programs meet strict standards of quality and accountability. Not one dime is distributed without rigorous review.

Our strong volunteer base enables United Way to raise and allocate funds at an impressively low cost of less than 15 percent. This figure is well below the Better Business Bureau guideline of 35 percent for charities.

In return, United Way provides a wide range of services to the community in addition to the community fundraising effort. These services include: identifying community needs, coordinating community programs, and providing experienced management and volunteer support for agencies.

United Way is a voluntary, community-based effort. Giving to United Way is strictly voluntary. The United Way strongly opposes any coercion used to solicit funds. Instead, we encourage volunteers to tell contributors about United Way agencies and the people they help. Education about the agencies and the careful volunteer oversight over how the dollars are invested is the best way to motivate giving. For more information on how each dollar donated makes a difference, see What Your Dollars Do.

Giving is a personal choice. How much to give is also a personal decision. Based on rising community needs, United Way volunteers have developed a Suggested Guide for Giving to assist in this decision.
